I left the border fairly disappointed, but i wasn't going to let it bring me down, the weather was quite perfect and i decided to spend this time with my step brother in Portland after a quick stay in Seattle where I met Shelby and ate hot dogs and drank warm natural light on the roof of his apartment, I slept on his floor as his computer made strange noises that put me a ease. I took off in the morning and headed south on hiway 5 to get to southwest Portland in time to catch Dave, he got a parking pass that let me leave my car under his apartment. We ate thai food and saved the leftovers for later that night. We walked around and he showed me the places he dug in Portland. We were only in Powells for about ten minutes and we came out with nearly ten books, one I'm opening today is Island by Adlous Huxley. We shot pool and had beer at the bar that was connected to his apartment. We continued to tour Portland the next day and played mancala in the park with Sally and Aislyn. Met some of Daves friends that rode nice track bike to a barbecue where we ate chips and had beers, no real food until the host invited us to his apartment to show us his studio setup and asked if he could take our portrait with an old camera that he was getting used to. The camera made some fantastic pictures. We took Sally home but not before visiting a bar right next to her house, we played pool and ate free popcorn while Sally heckled our bad shots and smiled when we made impressive ones. We left her complaining about her cigarettes which had escaped her sometime in the night. I spent the next day reading by the waterfront on 4/20, a "holiday" that I chose not to celebrate this year, the smell of pot was noticeable as I walked through the park to find my spot on the rocks. I read until the Surface crew dropped Ian in Seattle at which point and took off to catch up with Ian and pick up on all that I had missed out in Whistler. The weather was apparently pretty poor in Whistler which made me feel better about the time I had spent under the eight degree sun that was beating on the NorthWest. We spent the night in Seattle again only now with the loud snores that came from Ian. Shelby recorded the snores to mp3 and we got to relive the experience as I made breakfast. Ian had never been to Portland and I wanted to make sure he spent some time there so we pointed the car South on hiway 5 once again. We walked around town to take in what was the warmest day yet. In the evening we went to another barbecue, we ate portabello mushrooms, grilled pineapple and plantains, and when the time was right Nigel, who looks similar to Devendra Banhart began to play Devendra Banhart songs as two others were working hard at keeping long skinny candles they'd found in a free box next door light which seemed to be quite the task. It was getting late and we were determined to get on the road and drive through the night to get to Salt Lake by the afternoon. We did just that and bounced to the Talkings Heads, Bob Dylan, and a large collection of newer artist as the sun rose and we switched shifts driving. We made good time and made it to Ian's car at the Surface office by noon. I'm going to step back and mention the show that I got lucky at the night before I left for the week long trip. I had just locked my bicycle up at the university and was going to find a place to buy tickets as I noticed some friends standing in a doorway with ten other students that looked anxious. I found out they were waiting to get on stage for Girl Talk, who I could hear warming up as people in the mud cheered "Girl Talk Girl Talk Girl Talk" I decided to stick with them and see if I could join the party on the stage. All went well and Greg played a fantastic show and ceremoniously kept the crowd moving to his groove. Wild times

So on this trip I haven't gotten to do much skiing, the weather hasn't been to accomodating and the jump just isn't working. So i dedicated most of my energy into my Holga and taking a good roll of film, i read a little book Blake had at his house and decided to use a new technique (new to me.) It's been fun I hope it turns out the way I want it to.

Things have been interesting latey, I've begun a few projects, one of which is working with a buddy of mine, Shane Metos, he's a really passionate guy who wanted to get started with a company called Living Room, a cut, (sometimes) dyed, & sewn clothing collective, each piece is very unique and handmade in Salt Lake. He has started producing the prototypes we're waiting for screens til we can show some real finished products. This should turn out to be a really cool project and I hope it takes off!

The second project is still somewhat secret, but expect some cool things to come..

Found this track on pigeons and planes today and it was quite surprising to hear "Born into this" by Bukowski, one great American poet and novelist, followed by some verses by DOOM. It's weird that people have started sampling from 50s poets, crazy to think what's next.. anyhow it's a good song and you can download it from the link above if you think it's good..

Got broke off yesterday at Brighton with the SURFACE crew, I bent a ski pole in half on my face. No biggie.. But we had a good time regardless and Blake was killing a cliff line in rock gardens! Hennie was filming, and Ian was there taking photos.

Rad times.

I took a trip to Colorado in Janurary with the Surface guys and met with Hennie. The trip was for Walks Of Life and sent us through Breckenridge and Keystone for a day of riding at each resort. Thanks to Trevor for making the trip possible, and Mike for getting a hotel room and buying the good $1 tacos.

I normally don't ski with a helmet, but after taking a few slams recently I'm glad I started wearing one.

He's riding on next years Watch Life, they have a super simple white top sheet with a series of color ways on one tip..one of my favorite graphics for next years line up of Surface Skis.

Ian, Sam, and I decided to take a weekend party night off to play in the streets of Ogden, the night before was good and dramatic enough for our weekend. I showed up at the Downington house late, like 12 o'clock, to find Ian watching Gonzo, a great movie detailing Hunter S. Thompson's work in journalism during the election campaign in '72, drug culture, and the general footprint he left for the rest of us to wonder "what now? where do we go from here?"

We finished that and took off for Ogden at quarter til 1 and talked about Thompson's decision to commit suicide, the movie ends with one of his friends recalling on how poignant he could have been and how much of an influence he could have made in the elections of 2000 and 2004, seeing how we were facing pretty much the same evils then as we were in 1972. I feel that the lifestyle that Thompson led made his death somewhat glorifying, and all artists work becomes more appreciated after his death and I feel Thompson is no exception to that. His words on the '72 campaign are just as true in regards to the evils of politics. I think he would have been proud of the '08 campaign, and in some ways he could have attributed to result in some way or another.

After some discussion and jamming out to tracks like Shambala, Celia, and some Zeppelin on 94.1 and 103.5 we showed up to this sweet spot that didn't have nearly enough snow to even think about hitting, so we poked around and found a cool Hip/Urban step down to get tricky on. After a long setup a cop rolled into the alley we were at with a look of confusion on his face. He was a younger cop and didn't seem like he cared what we were doing. I told him what we were doing where we were taking off from where we were landing and he seemed even more confused. "Okay" he said "Just don't want to come back with your head split open" which he didn't have to do lucky for both our sakes. So he took off and we spent the next two hours hitting the hip until we got the right shot.. almost jumped on Ian who was planted 5 feet away from where i was landing with his fisheye.

Once we finished up at the spot it was just about 6 a.m. which is an awesome time to get done with a night shoot right? right..

We drove back and the jams weren't coming as hard, mostly cause I was to tired to worry about radio surfing and more concerned with driving back. Check the Surface Lab for some nice photos from last night and previous nights...

Went on a nice hike near the end of the day with Mike White which was followed by one of the best runs of the day. Mike was also telling me about a indoor ski facility that's going up in Ogden that should be open by the new year he hopes. I hope so too!

I was talking about my friend Sunn earlier, Sunn Kim that is. I first met Sunn on the field at my school playing tackle football during lunch in something like seventh grade. I thought he was a year older than me cause he was much bigger then me at the time, regardless we became good friends and he's a rad guy. Now he's schooling at Walla Walla Washington, and has began to persue his interest in sports photography so when he came to town a shot me a text (when IM was out of town) about shooting something I couldn't have been more excited. Sunn is a fun-loving, easy going, all in all nice guy so it was nice to have him accompany me to this rail spot. We were there for well over an hour doing rail tricks to a concrete bank of a landing. Super fun time with the exception of a few scary falls from kristie and a head banger at the end from myself it was a completely productive day. Even got some HD shit (NBD)!!

Ian is a long time friend, and he is up against Robbie Sell, he submitted a photo from a trip we took to see the sun tunnels in some hard to find place in Utah. Jordan Omohundro, and Jon Spiris came along. We drove through a small town picked up some beers, and made jokes of the odd things they sold at the gas station. Once we found the tunnels Jordan began to skate and had a few good falls before he successfully GTSed.

Ski Journey

The 2007/2008 season was a strange and amazing time. It started in Guardsman at the bone zone riding all sorts of rails getting some tricks and having fun with buddies from Variety Pack. Once it started snowing in the city i was eager to get at it. So i did and ended up breaking my arm and getting in a cast for 8 weeks which was a big drag, and I don't really remember what I did during that time.. which might let you in on what i was really doing during that time. Anyhow once my arm healed up I had a new street team to ride with. Paco Garcia and Eric Strand (who are my two favorite Euro riders) came crashing in Salt Lake and on my couch, so we hit the streets and I showed them some Utah classics like cottonwood heights, rail gardens, the dimple dell rails, also we went out and found new things to get on. That was rad. Then they left and I lost my street team for the most part. But my buddy Mike White kept it real and we explored some of Ogden's back alleys and up to the cement buildings up Little cottonwood which we made a nice wallride out of. Once snow started melting in the city it was time to hit jumps at park city and rails in Brighton. All of that was fun until I tore the knee up and the rest is history I guess. So anyways Jeremiah Langston stuck with me most of the season filming our happenings. He just whipped up this edit to an Animal Collective song called Grass. It's does a good job showing how my ski year went.

Snow in the City

was a really nice surprise this morning. Unfortunately i was determined to finish painting my room, so i did. Also put up a coat hook, and a shelf from a piece of a door Mouse gave me about a year ago that i was happy to get some use out of it.

I was listening to KRCL and was lucky to catch the song Anarchy on an album called The Past Didn't go Anywhere. The album is a collection of recordings of Utah Phillips's telling stories at shows with music put to it by Ani DiFranco. The album has some really captivating, thought provoking songs throughout. Check it.

I was on my way to foothill and thought I would save my legs a bit and hop on trax to get to "church" with Corbett, Brett, Alex, and Corrin. I put my bike next to the machine that spews out tickets then picked the seat closest to my bike, picked up where I left off in The First and Third by Neil Cassady while I waited a strong odor filled my nose, and after a few pages I looked around only to find a present from the night before someone left the commuters of Salt Lake. Talking about a few days ago my buddies at Surface hooked me up with some SWEEET skis. Jordan, Thayne, and I went up to Alta wednesday/thursday to check out the new Live Life 2s. They're a super fun ski you can take pretty much anywhere, i haven't run into any problems.. as soon as i figured my bindings out.. eff that by the way.

The first of many Surface Shred Days @ Brighton happened today, someone jokingly (I think) said that everyday was Surface day at Brighton.. maybe someday that'll be true.. someday. til then it's baggy and tight, gypsy and G, gangsta and emo, whatever and whatever.

Another fun day at Brighton even though it seems like the storms keep skipping past the wasatch mtns. There's nothing like taking laps with your friends. It can make the most blah day at the mountain fun as hell. Ian Matteson updated his photoblog with a bunch of photos from the day so go look at them. Along with the goodtimes today i watch a really good documentary on Justice at my buddy Jeffs (Hot Noise) and it really showed how rowdy those dudes get.

Biking in the wind is one of my least favorite ways to ride my bike, and it was a windy day today. I don't mind riding in rain or snow but wind kills me. I hopped on my bike anyways to check on Bigs and Cash my sister Helens boston terriers. Picked up some stuff along the way (handlebars) and it turned out pretty good. despite the wind.

Winter was good

But I got hurt and was out for eight months (as of last week)

So I read and stuff while in recovery (long ass time), but once that was over I saw some concerts and partied with friends. Summer started off great you could say.

I had to carry my buddy Brett to the car that night. maybe not I'm not sure..

Then my sister, Sam, and myself traveled a 15 hours to see Girl Talk and a whole mess of great bands like Fleet Foxes, Chromeo, DeVotchKa, U.S.E., Vampire Weekend, and a lot more that I can't remember.. I'm rambling.. (thanks Shelby White for the photos above/below)

Anyhow. I ran into some bad luck and my bicycle got stolen and got the opportunity to build a new one, which was sweet until i met Sean and we started getting in trouble with cars, first when a car turned into me minutes after the picture above was taken, and second when Sean's Blazer got smashed into by a race car driver that got lost and ended up in our Sean's bumper..

Got to hang out with these two a lot which was nice.

I scored this sweet new bike free from that accident I mentioned. So it wasn't all bad..

Brighton is opening soon. real soon. Obama is our president. Things are great. Booyah!
